Light sticks are a safe source of light in emergency situations. They give off enough light to enable seeing things well in the dark, yes you can read and do other tasks with them. They are non toxic, do not generate heat and do not have a naked flame that could start fires or cause explosions with gas leaks. Our green sticks will glow for 12 hours (Green/Yellow/Red last 12 hours, all other colours glow for 6-8 hours, this is the standard glow time for all light sticks). Tip - if you shield the lightstick with your hand so that the glare does not face your eyes you can hold it forward and use it like a torch, this gives enough light in pitch black conditions to see your way clearly.
